The Halifax Moosehads scored just a few minutes into the game but it took overtime to put away the win.
Nathan MacKinnon scored the winner with a power play goal 1:17 into overtime to give the Mooseheads a 4-3 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Centre 200 in Sydney.
MacKinnon took a pass from Konrad Abeltshauser and put the one-timer past Screaming Eagles goaltender Philippe Trudeau.
The Moose were still fighting off a nasty illness that affected close to half the roster. Ryan Falkenham and Luca Ciampini sat out the game still recovering from illness, and Martin Frk served a suspension for a spear in pre-season, leaving the roster with just 10 forwards.
The Herd outshot the Screaming Eagles by a 45-18 margin and had a 3-1 lead heading into third. Andrew Ryan and Austyn Hardie had the goals for the Mooseheads. Hardie showed the hands of a goal scorer, netting a shorthanded goal on a 3-on-1 rush.
The Mooseheads have a day off as they head to Charlottetown to play Sunday at 3 p.m. against the PEI Rocket.
